Sushi is truly a delicacy that has spread throughout the world from Japan and gained devoted fans. The sushi experience is coveted and while chefs train for years to specialize in the craft, at home versions can satisfy the craving when feeling cozy during a night in.

With this recipe we want you to:

  • Make a night out of it and prepare it with a partner or friend
  • Customize as you please with your favorite ingredient
  • At-home chefs can improve their craft
  • Save some money!

Follow along to make our at home sushi, we’ll be making some Temaki (the rolled in seaweed type) and enjoy our stunning Sushi Tray Set featured throughout which can be purchased here.

Sushi Set

Step 1: Cook the Rice

Rinse and cook short-grain Japanese rice with the appropriate amount of water. Season it with rice vinegar, sugar, and salt while still hot. Let the rice cool to room temperature before using it.

Step 2: Assemble the Sushi

Place a sheet of nori on a sushi mat (or a clean kitchen towel).

Wet your hands and spread a layer of seasoned rice over it leaving about 1 inch of space at the top. Add fillings and roll the mat tightly around the fillings until you have a tight cylinder-shaped sushi roll. Wet the exposed edge of the nori with a bit of water to help it stick.

Step 3: Slice and Season

Slice the sushi rolls into 1-inch pieces and serve with soy sauce and wasabi for dipping. You can also add pickled ginger, sesame seeds, and other condiments to enhance the flavor.
